Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB)

A unique effort of the U.S. Department of Justice; local, state, tribal, and federal public safety agencies; and national organizations, the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Programs provide death and education benefits to survivors of fallen law enforcement officers, firefighters, and other first responders and disability benefits to officers catastrophically injured in the line of duty.

The amount of the PSOB benefit is $448,575.00 for eligible deaths occurring on or after October 1, 2024. For benefit amounts prior to October 1, 2024, please visit

Who can get Social Security Survivor benefits?


You may qualify if you’re the spouse, divorced spouse, child, or dependent parent of someone who worked and paid Social Security taxes before they died.
